Community-Engaged Classrooms Program

Think about the possibilities...

Questions? Contact the Community-Engaged Classrooms Coordinator.

How It Works

The Community-Engaged Classrooms Project seeks to encourage and support intentional curricular activities that engage students in projects that address human and community needs. The Project assists Illinois State faculty and community agencies/organizations with identifying potential projects and establishing partnerships with one another.

  • These experiential education projects are situated by faculty members within a semester-long course(s), and therefore are different from one-time volunteer/community service experiences. (Examples of these types of projects are available on the American Democracy Project web site)
  • The service activities are connected to the course learning objectives and faculty assist students with understanding this connection.
  • Faculty will provide opportunities for students to reflect on their experiences and learn from one another.

The Process:

  1. A community organization posts a project/idea/need using the brief online form.
  2. The submitted project information will be reviewed by the Community-Engaged Classrooms Project Coordinator. If there are questions the Coordinator will contact the organization for clarification.
  3. Information about the project will be posted to the Community-Engaged Classrooms Project website for review.
  4. Interested parties will contact one another to discuss the project in more detail and ultimately decide on whether or not to pursue the project together.
**Please be aware that we can not guarantee when or if a ‘match’ will be made.**
  5. If both parties decide to pursue the project, one of the parties will notify the Community-Engaged Classrooms Project Coordinator and the project posting will be removed.

Partnership

Partnership is key when establishing an effective service learning project. An effective partnership is mutually beneficial with all "parties having common interests, responsibilities, privileges, and power (Community-Campus Partnerships for Health, 2001).
